Agustina Raimunda María Saragossa Doménech, or “Agustina de Aragón”, (Barcelona, baptized on March 6, 1786- † Ceuta, May 29, 1857), was a famous Spanish heroine defender from Saragossa during the siege at Spanish War of Independence.

It is discussed whether Agustina was born in Reus, Tarragona province or in other places, but the latest predominant Aragon biography locates her birth in 1786 in the Catalan city of Barcelona, precisely in La Ribera district, at Sombrerers Street. The daughter of Francisco Ramón Zaragoza Labastida and Raimunda Doménech Gasull, was baptized on 6th of March 1786 at the Santa María del Mar church in Barcelona contiguous to the street where she was born.

Agustina got married with Juan Roca Vilaseca, corporal of the artillery, when she was 17 years old, on 17th of April 1803. Her husband participated at Spanish War of Independence from the
beginning, taking part at Bruc campaign.

These war events took him and Agustina to Saragossa.

During the besiege of Saragossa, Agustina carried out the heroine action which made her celebrated. When all defenders at the Portillo city door had been injured or dead, the French troops started to take it by storm. The situation was desperate and that’s way Agustina that formed a part of a female group which was taking care about the numbers of injured, achieved to light the cannon over the French troops which were running over the entrance seemingly defenseless. The French attackers being afraid of the ambush decided to retreat and the new defenders went to cover the hole protecting the city one more time.

Agustina de Aragon died when she was 71 years old, on 29th of May 1857 in Ceuta. Until 1870 her remains lay in the Church of Our Lady of the Pillar until 14th June 1908 when she was moved to the Chapel of the Annunciation in the Church of Our Lady of the Portillo, where she are venerate as a symbol of a great heroine, the courage and decision that conquered the opponent and repelled the enemy. Agustina is considered one of the most representative symbols of Spanish resistance against the Napoleonic invaders. This guerrilla received the titles and decorations of the Saragossa Defender and the Reward of Courage and Patriotism, the order of General Palafox and achieved the Capitan of the Army range.
